Foundation Campaign Achieves $10.4 Million

The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation has reached a historic milestone. Foundation officials today announced the community has responded with an unprecedented $10.4 million in pledges. According to Campaign Co-Chair, Gail Kaneb, the milestone has been reached because of a positive focus throughout the community.

“This is a wonderful achievement on the part of everyone in our community,” beamed Kaneb. “We knew people would come through, and to do so in such a magnificent way is incredibly satisfying. The continuing inflow of donations from caring citizens means the scope of the Cornwall restructuring project remains on track even with new construction component delayed until 2008 and every additional dollar collected will become vitally important.”

“We knew the Ministry faced an enormous challenge because of the huge financial investment that came with health care restructuring,” continued Kaneb. “We were both relieved and gratified with Minister Smitherman’s announcement that Cornwall was on the approved list of projects. At the same time, we realized it will mean additional costs because of inflationary factors.”

The final amount of the project has yet to be determined but hospital officials know it will exceed the original estimate of $59.9 million. “While the final amount will depend on inflationary factors, it will mean our community share will be closer to $13 million,” reports Kaneb. “Because of that, our community’s amazing response has become doubly important.”

Hospital CEO, Jeanette Despatie spoke of the project and in particular, of the government’s role. “Minister Smitherman has been supportive of Cornwall’s efforts from day one, and he demonstrated that support with his announced approval for the early works project and the $7.5 million planning grant. Moreover, we are most pleased to be on Minister Caplan’s five year infrastructure list.”
