Project Summary
Redevelopment Project and Capital Campaign
Together, We're Stronger and Healthier
A unified community is a stronger community. Better equipped to face today's economic challenges. Better prepared to adapt to a changing world. Better able to manage scarce resources and harness its people's energy and skills. The union of our city's two historic hospitals into the Cornwall Community Hospital, completed on January 1, 2004, is an opportunity to join together and embark on a new era of health care in Cornwall.
For more than a century, our two founding institutions have saved countless lives, healed the sick and comforted families with compassion and medical excellence. Today, however, in a world of diminished resources and growing demand, Cornwall Community Hospital is responding with a timely plan to redevelop the McConnell Street site and amalgamate all services at one location by 2010. This will enable us to deliver more efficient service and will enhance our ability to attract health care professionals. It also focuses our investment on today's greatest demand, while laying a foundation for tomorrow's need. And finally, it builds an institution that supports our physicians, nurses and support staff - hometown heroes who continue to serve us with care, skill and dedication.
The Investment
A cost-effective solution that's consistent with our community's current and future needs, the proposed investment focuses on ER, Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging. These are the departments that are today the most crowded; where the demand is greatest; and where the most vigorous growth is forecast.
New construction: With its bright, modern new facade on McConnell Street, the 88,442 square-foot addition will house a larger ER, Day Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Surgical Suite and support services.
Full renovation: 36,682 sq. ft. within the existing building will be fully renovated to house Ambulatory Care, Cardio Respiratory services, the kitchen and food services, Haemodyalisis, Labour Delivery and Recovery Rooms, Mental Health and Day programs, a Bed Medical Unit, Intensive Care, and Obstetrics.
Partial renovation: 11,254 sq. ft. will undergo partial renovation. This will include a 24-bed Surgical Patient Care Unit.
Space left as-is: 162,000 sq. ft. will be virtually untouched.

One Family, One Future
While our community will ultimately decide how this project will take shape, one thing is abundantly clear: we must plan and build today, if we expect to provide excellent medical care for our loved ones in the future. We must act now if we expect to continue the traditions established by our hospitals more than a century ago.
By redeveloping and building on the McConnell Street site, we will:
- Deliver more efficient and effective medical services for everyone in our community, regardless of language, ethnicity or creed;
- Focus our investment where it will have the greatest positive impact on our community's health - ER, Surgical Service and Diagnostic Imaging;
- Provide a better work environment for our valued medical staff;
- Enhance Cornwall's recruitment and attractiveness for more physicians, specialists and nurses to relocate and stay here.
- And lay the groundwork for our community's future health care needs by developing the site with the most potential.
We're Ready!
Feasibility and engineering plans are completed and discussions with province for major funding are well advanced. We've also embarked on discussions with Municipal and SD&G governments. By raising $10 million to complete the project by 2010, we're demonstrating to government that our community stands united. We're ready. And we're committed.
Our community must now rally together. We must join together and demonstrate to governments that we are solidly behind this project, in order to ensure full and timely support. But more importantly, we must support the redevelopment of Cornwall Community Hospital - and support it generously - because it's the best solution for our families' health today and in the future.
